Relish member wins investment on Dragon’s Den
It was with great interest that we watched Dragon’s Den on Sunday (we’re big fans anyway) – but this week’s was particularly interesting as one of our members, Sweet Mandarin was pitching for investment in their Chinese sauces range.
I don’t know whether you saw it or not – but Lisa and Helen did a fantastic job. Under Dragon-style questioning they kept their cool, and their passion and belief in their product and business were clear for all to see.
Despite some concerns being raised by the dragons – Lisa and Helen weren’t phased at all.
Peter Jones’s view was that the product didn’t have a USP (i.e. wasn’t unique enough) – you have probably heard us talking about that a lot too if you’re a Relish member or follow our blogs and tips emails (sign up for our free guide on the Relish homepage to receive your email tips too). Lisa is so proud of her product that she puts her own face on each and every one of them!
And despite Deborah Meaden’s concerns that retailers would squeeze their margins too much (something I’m sure lots of you empathise with!), Lisa and Helen kept their cool.
With interest from major retailers and a listing already secured in the Chinese supermarket chain Wing Yip, Duncan Bannatyne and Hilary Devey saw the potential and became joint investors to the tune of £50,000!
This wasn’t the first time in the den for Sweet Mandarin – their first appearance was in 2005. Lisa is delighted with the investment from the Dragons. And we are delighted to have been able to support her and her brand on their ‘recipe to retail’ journey. “We used the Relish retailer presentation template for a buyer meeting, it was a fantastic service,” Lisa told us. “We really appreciate the help, expertise and moral support Relish offer.”
Just goes to show that with a great product, passion, persistence and belief – you can reach your goals!
