Beautiful Seasonal Photos: by Lauren Mclean

Lauren Mclean is a  freelance food photographer whose clients include Sainsbury’s, Asda, Weight Watchers, Co-operative Food and Giraffe, to name a few.  We are delighted to welcome Lauren as our guest blogger.

Each month, Lauren will be blogging about all things foodie related to photography and we are looking forward to reading her blogs and looking at the mouthwatering photos!

“I thought for my first blog post, I’d look at the photographs I have taken recently for products that are in season this month. May is a fantastic month, as the daylight last longer and everyone is always happier when they have a little sun on their skin! Also, I think it is important for us all to support our local suppliers by eating British food when it’s in season.

This month is a good month for fresh and tasty ingredients! I think the first one to mention should be asparagus. My favorite recipe with asparagus is quite simple really- It’s just Asparagus with a dippy egg.

Whilst looking into different asparagus recipes, I came across this website –; there are some fantastic recipes on this website, and a comprehensive list of local suppliers.

I think the next obvious choice for in season produce this month is Lamb. I’m not a massive Lamb eater myself, but my Food Stylist friend is, and this is her favourite way to serve it…

As you can see in this photograph, all the emphasis is on the meat, and I think that is really important when selling produce to your viewer. When I’m taking a photograph, I want people to look at it and want to eat it! I think I have really achieved that with this image, as the lighting really draws the viewer’s eye to the lamb itself.

Next is the beautiful fish – Mackerel. I just love the colour of this fish. With this next photograph, I’ve used more of any arty approach to food photography, rather than trying to sell the mackerel.

With this photograph, I was just playing with tones and colour. The use of the blue and white wallpaper has really helped to bring out the colour in the fish tails.

And finally not really an in season feature, but who doesn’t like a little something sweet! Chocolate brownies are an all time favorite…

Other ingredients to buy this month are Broccoli, Carrots, New Potatoes, Spring Onions, Bananas, Passion Fruit, Mushrooms, Basil, Beef, Rabbit, Crab, Conger eel and Lemon Sole, to name just a few…

Hope you’ve enjoyed my post. Each month I am going to be looking at different images and trends within the food industry, so please call by again!
